What is a referral or authorization? Do I need a referral to be seen?

Some insurance plans require a referral when seeking care from a specialist.  A referral is completed by your primary care physician and is sent into your insurance company.  A referral means that your primary care physician has approved for you to see a doctor outside of your primary clinic.  A referral DOES NOT guarantee payment from your insurance company. Neurosurgical Associates will work with you and your insurance company to obtain an authorization for certain services.  An authorization means that a proposed medical visit/treatment is medically reasonable and necessary.  A authorization DOES NOT guarantee payment from your insurance company. Do I need a referral to be seen? Most of our physicians request that you are referred to our clinic by a physician to ensure you have had proper work up.  A referral, however; may be required by your insurance company.  Any questions regarding referral/authorization requirements should be directed to your health insurance company.
